AFP staffer illegally accessed police database

A former Russian soldier and Australian Federal Police staff member illegally accessed police data to run a “calculated campaign” against his former partner, a Canberra court has heard.

Roman Eiginson, 53, spent about five months in jail before pleading guilty to stalking and illegally accessing police information.

He used the information to target his former girlfriend last year.

The pair had split after she returned from overseas to find he had married a Russian woman while she was away.

Eiginson stalked his former partner by mobile phone, email and Facebook as well as hanging around the home of her new partner and approaching her as she arrived at work.

He had obtained her new address and other details from the police database.

Prosecutor Anthony Williamson told the court the actions were not spontaneous.

“It was clearly planned, calculated,” Mr Williamson said.

He said the action was a gross intrusion to the privacy of others and a breach of his authority as an AFP employee.

“He then used this information to further his campaign against the victim,” Mr Williamson said.

But Eiginson’s lawyer Ken Archer told the court the actions were out of character and happened at a time when he was in psychological distress, partly over the death of his father.

“He got completely diverted from reality and committed the offences,” Mr Archer said.

Mr Archer said the consequences had now rained down on him.

“His reputation has been destroyed, his employment destroyed,” he said.

Mr Archer also told the court that because of Eiginson’s occupation his time in jail was spent in strict management with only two hours a day outside his cell.

He has urged the court not to impose any more jail time.

Eiginson will be sentenced on Tuesday.
