The actress who played Joan “The Freak” Ferguson in television series Prisoner has strenuously denied any wrongdoing after being charged with sex offences involving a 13-year-old girl.

Maggie Kirkpatrick, 74, was best known for her role as the prison warden, but also had roles in other popular Australian television shows including Home and Away, All Saints, Pizza, Water Rats and Blue Heelers and Hey Dad!.

She says she will fight the charges when she faces court in August.

She denies all wrongdoing: “I need to go to court to have this ridiculous situation quashed,” she told News Corp. “Allegations have been levelled at me, yes. Are they true? Absolutely not.”

When asked if she would battle the charges, she replied: “Of course.”

“The evidence is in the court. I don’t think it’s appropriate that I say any more,” Kirkpatrick said.

Kilpatrick is charged with two counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency of a person under 16.

News Corp report the charges involve an incident involving a 13-year-old girl in the 1980s.

She will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 19.
