Family, friends and members of the AFL community gathered to mourn slain Adelaide coach Phil Walsh at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday afternoon.

Adelaide and Port Adelaide football players and staff attended the service, while representatives from all other AFL clubs flew in from across Australia.

Adelaide Crows chaplain Mark Purser served as MC during the service, which lasted for two hours.

Speakers included Sharon Watt, an old family friend of Walsh’s from Hamilton, who spoke of Phil Walsh’s life. Ms Watt also passed on a request from Walsh’s wife Meredith that attendees say a prayer for Cy Walsh, her son who has been charged with the murder.

Also speaking to the attendees in Adelaide Oval’s Magarey Room, Port Adelaide chaplain Brandon Chaplin recalled receiving a phone call from Walsh on his last full day alive.

Mr Chaplin described Walsh’s mood during the phone call as “unsettled and disturbed”.

Walsh had told Mr Chaplin he wanted to catch up with him.

A video tribute to Walsh included messages from old friend and colleague Mark Williams, who spent 10 years with Walsh at the Brisbane Bears and Port Adelaide, including a 2004 premiership win.

Williams did not attend the service, but thanked Walsh for “always having [my] back”.

Snippets of Walsh’s favourite films were played, including Spartacus, The Right Stuff and Big Wednesday, while a surfboard was placed at the front of the room along with green tea, a bottle of his favourite red wine and chocolates.

At the end of the ceremony, Adelaide and Port Adelaide players formed a guard of honour.

Although a veteran of the football world, 2015 marked the first year Walsh took on the role of senior coach.

Following a VFL career in the 1980s, Walsh worked as a fitness coordinator at Geelong before assistant coaching at Port Adelaide (including its 2004 premiership team) and West Coast. In October 2014, Walsh signed a three-year contract as Adelaide’s senior coach.

Walsh coached just 13 games at the club before he was found dead in his Somerton Park home on July 3.

His son Cy Walsh was charged with the murder and is spending time in a psychiatric facility.

Further commemorations are expected at the weekend when the Crows take on Port Adelaide for Showdown 39 at Adelaide Oval, which will be broadcast live to Elder Park for those who could not attend the match.

Long time rivals Crows and Port Power will enter the ground through a joint banner prior to the match.
