Dick Smith might challenge Tony Abbott

Dick Smith, who was awarded Companion of the Order of Australia during Queen’s birthday celebrations, has hinted he may run as a political candidate in Tony Abbott’s electorate of Warringah at next year’s federal election.

“There’s a chance I might … have a go in Tony Abbott’s seat, mainly to communicate that if you’re a government and you say you are going to do things, you have to do them,” Mr Smith told ABC radio on Monday.

The businessman and philanthropist Dick Smith intends to fight red tape and unbridled economic growth with his own federal political party.

Mr Smith recently registered the business name ‘The Dick Smith Party’ with the hope of contesting the next election, which is expected to be held in late 2016.

The businessman previously told The New Daily he did not intend to stand as a candidate.

The political issues of most concern to Mr Smith were ‘ridiculously huge’ rates of immigration, the ‘madness’ of perpetual economic growth and red tape in the aviation industry.
