‘We can’t continue as we are’

Liberal MP Jane Prentice says the party “can’t continue as we are” and that Tony Abbott is “not taking the people with us”, as the LNP party looks set to lose power in Queensland.

Ms Prentice, the federal member for Ryan in the south-western suburbs of Brisbane, made the comments while appearing on ABC News’s Queensland election panel.

It followed a week of bad headlines for Mr Abbott, who has been under fire following his “captain’s call” this week to knight Prince Phillip.

“Tony has said he has listened and learned. He is making a keynote speech on Monday at the Press Club, but we can’t continue as we are. I think that’s the lesson from today,” Ms Prentice said.

“We can’t continue as we are, with not taking the people with us. We are getting bad feedback.”

QUESTION TIME

“I was speaking to him last week and I said to him, ‘You are not taking the people with you; we are not explaining why we are doing things. We have achieved many things, but people don’t understand what we’re doing or why we’re doing it, and we need to take them on that message’.

“I think most people would agree with that, we are not getting the message out there and results like today don’t help.”

Ms Prentice said Mr Abbott was a “very, very successful leader”, but the party needed to examine what it was doing.

“We work as a team. I don’t think you can hang Tony out to dry. It is team work. We need to look at – I think we all need to look at what we’re doing,” she said.

“Clearly the results today are quite significant and there are some strong messages we need to take out at a federal level as well.”

Queensland Treasurer Nicholls earlier in the night said federal factors were “less than helpful” during the campaign.
