A man who threatened to “bring down” a Sydney-bound Virgin flight, forcing the plane back to Perth, has been ordered to pay almost $60,000 in fines and reparations.

Brenden James Tume, 23, had consumed alcohol and cannabis before boarding the aircraft, which left Perth Airport at 5pm on July 9 but returned two hours later after he became abusive towards crew members.

The Perth Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday that when Tume woke up, he was disoriented and could not find his wallet.

“Stop talking s*** about me,” he repeatedly said to the flight crew.

“You have got my f***ing wallet.”

The court heard Tume shook his fists and threw magazines around while children were seated nearby.

He then yelled at staff: “I will get you. I will cause a stir and bring this plane down.”

The court heard Virgin suffered a significant financial loss from turning the flight around, including fuel and accommodation for passengers because a curfew prevented the airline arranging another plane to Sydney.

Tume’s lawyer told the court there was no forethought to his client’s actions and the incident was not an accurate reflection of his character.

Tume, a father of two with a third child on the way, works in his family’s removal business in Sydney and flies regularly between the cities.

Chief Magistrate Steven Heath said people expected to fly safely and Tume’s selfish act had caused distress to many people.

“Your behaviour on this occasion – under the influence of whatever – was completely inappropriate and irrational,” Mr Heath said.

Tume pleaded guilty to two offences and was fined $10,000 and ordered to pay reparation costs of $48,568.90, as well as court costs of $94.30.
