A man in his 20s has died after falling from a balcony on the 26th floor of an apartment block in South Melbourne.

Police say the accident happened about 4am on Saturday.

They are currently interviewing several people who were in the apartment at the time the man died.

The coroner will investigate whether alcohol was a factor.
