Labor continues poll dominance

The Labor Party continues to lead the coalition government on a two-party preferred basis in the polls, posting its 13th straight lead, the best result for the party since 2010.

The latest Newspoll conducted for The Australian shows Labor is having its best run since April 2010, when the party led in two-party-preferred terms for 83 consecutive surveys.

Labor is ahead by an election-winning margin of 54 to 46 per cent, and has placed in front of the coalition government in 18 of the 22 Newspolls taken since last year’s election.

Labor led on a two-party-preferred basis in every Newspoll between November 2006 and April 2010 under Kevin Rudd.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott led for 33 consecutive surveys as opposition leader between April 2011, when Julia Gillard introduced plans for a carbon tax, until September 2012.

According to the latest polls, Mr Abbott is still ahead of Opposition Leader Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister, 39 to 39 per cent.

The coalition government still has a higher primary vote than Labor, 38 to 36 per cent.
