Warship under female command

The navy’s HMAS Toowoomba will be the first Australian warship in the Middle East region to be commanded by a woman.

Commander Catherine Hayes was at the helm of the Anzac-class frigate as it set off from Perth on Saturday for a five-month mission.

“This is another step in the right direction in providing leadership roles and opportunities for women in the Australian Defence Force,” Defence Minister David Johnston said.

The vessel will be part of an international counter-terrorism effort, working to promote maritime security while fighting piracy and narcotics operations.
