A dangerous criminal who is required to wear a satellite tracking device has gone missing in Victoria.

The 42-year-old man was last detected about 2.30am on Sunday at a minimum security correctional facility in Ararat.

A search by authorities has found the man’s tracking device, but not the man.

The missing man cannot be named for legal reasons.

He is described as Caucasian, about 176cm tall with a medium build, with blue eyes, fair-coloured and close-cropped hair, and a fair complexion.

He has both his ears pierced and tattoos on his right lower leg, back and arms.

The man may be wearing camouflage-coloured clothing.

The public is urged to alert police by calling triple-zero if they see him.
