A reported attack on an eight-year-old girl by a man at a Melbourne primary school is false, police say.

Investigators were told the girl was approached by the man in the grounds of a Hawthorn primary school on Thursday May 15 and dragged into a secluded area.

The man was then alleged to have verbally assaulted and kicked her before undoing her uniform top as she waited to be picked up by her parents after school.

Police on Tuesday said they found the report to be false.

“Inquiries have revealed the information that was reported to police was false and that the incident did not occur,” a Victoria Police spokesman said in a statement.
