Victoria and South Australia swelter

· How much did recent heatwave cost?

Temperatures are soaring across Victoria and South Australia today, creating dangerous fire conditions.

Parts of northern Victoria are forecast to reach a sweltering 45C, while Melbourne is expected to reach the high 30s.

A total fire ban is in place in the state’s Central, North Central and South West fire districts.

Adelaide is tipped to reach a maximum of 43C before a cool southerly change brings welcome relief in the evening.

That change is not expected to reach Victoria until Monday and is likely to bring with it dangerous fire conditions.

A spokeswoman for the State Control Centre said strong winds and lightning were likely on the way, but no rain.

“Tomorrow is the most concerning because of the conditions that are coming with the change,” she told AAP.

“It is a school day as well, so we urge all Victorians to check their fire plans.”
