Anthony Albanese to reveal date of Voice referendum next week

Australians will vote on a Voice to Parliament within the next two months after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Wednesday he will announce the date next week.

Mr Albanese will officially announce the date of the Australian Indigenous Voice referendum on August 30 in the crucial state of  South Australia to start a six-week campaign.

It is widely anticipated Australians will head to the polls on October 14.

“Next week the date will be announced. I will be campaigning for constitutional recognition. Because if not now, when?” the Prime Minister said in a statement.

Mr Albanese will be joined by prominent Voice supporters in Adelaide to kick off his campaign in support of the change to the constitution.

The referendum, Australia’s first in 24 years, must win the majority of votes in a majority of states to succeed.

Of the 44 referendums held since 1901, just eight have succeeded.

“Nothing to lose, everything to gain. Every Australian will get a say in this. Every Australian will have the opportunity to vote yes for a practical, positive difference in people’s lives.”
