Orangutans taken to school in wheelbarrows

Animal welfare group International Animal Rescue has posted a video of members pushing orangutans in wheelbarrows to ‘school’ where they will can learn to climb, play and fend for themselves.

Piled into their vehicles, the baby orangutans were rescued from captivity but need to learn the ways of the wild properly, before they’re released back into natural habitats.

Lis Key, from IAR, told the Mirror: “These orangutans are brought into the IAR centre for veterans treatment and rehabilitation.”

“It can take years for these animals to develop the skills and the strength they need to survive in the forest.

“In the meantime they progress form baby school, where babies and very young infants learn to climb and play with other young orangutans, on to forest school.

“Here older infants are given more freedom to behave as they would in the wild, foraging for food, building nests and even sleeping out in the forest overnight if they so choose.”

We are thrilled to say that photos of our cheeky rescued orangutans have made it into 7 major UK newspapers today! Here’s the footage that is stealing everyone’s hearts … our rescued orangutans off to forest school!A huge thank you to Heribertus in our Indonesian team for the amazing video!
