The thought of undergoing a double mastectomy is daunting enough to dissolve the courage and spirit of even the bravest individual.

But instead of breaking down, Deborah Cohen decided to prepare for her surgery a little differently. The ob-gyn and mother of two enlisted her surgery team to take part in a Beyonce dance party.

Wearing nothing but a surgical gown, Cohen boogies down in her San Francisco hospital room with such unshakeable joy that it’s easy to forget she faces a large-scale operation.

Unsurprisingly, the video has gone viral and the effect of the dance session has extended well beyond the operating room. Cohen encouraged friends and family to also participate by recording their own dance parties and participating in a virtual flash mob.

“I have visions of a healing video montage,” she wrote on her website. “Nothing brings me greater joy than catalyzing others to dance, move, be in their bodies.”

There is no doubt that Cohen’s courageous optimism in the face of cancer will inspire many – but one other thing becomes clear from watching her shimmy to Beyonce’s “Get Me Bodied.”
