Kununurra youth night patrols get funding

Charity organisation Save the Children says ongoing funding for its Kununurra youth night patrols is great news for the town’s at-risk youths.

On weekends, night patrol staff find children wandering the streets after dark, take them to a safe place and refer them to support services.

An inter-agency week-long version of the night patrol, called Operation SHARP, was trialled last year and was credited with reducing juvenile crime and boosting school attendance.

The Department of Child Protection has committed funds allowing Operation SHARP to run eight times a year for four years.

Save the Children’s Juan Larranaga says as part of that, the original night patrol will also be funded.

“So what will happen is the tender will be for three years and with an option for two one-year extensions, so in any extra there’s extra funding for the night patrol for another four to five years.”
