It is almost 10 years since 13-year-old Daniel was abducted on the Sunshine Coast while waiting for a bus at Woombye.
Yesterday, Megan Hitch was reunited with her 16-year-old autistic son Samuel, who was found safe after he had gone missing from his Mudgeeraba home last weekend.
Samuel walked into the ABC’s Ultimo headquarters in Sydney yesterday and was handed into the care of the New South Wales police.
Ms Hitch says the Mudgeeraba Special School that Sam attends took part in Day for Daniel activities this morning.
She says the Morcombe’s child safety education program may have helped her son stay safe.
“Denise Morcombe had contacted me and she was fantastic and very supportive and is a very good cause,” she said.
“I think everybody needs to take note and educate the kids, because I think that may have had a big hand in Sam not coming across too much danger.”
‘Sore and sorry’
Ms Hitch relived the excitement of her son being found safe and well when she was reunited with him last night.
She says she got to the Brisbane Airport as quickly as possible.
“We were waiting and waiting and going ‘where’s Sam, where’s Sam’ and he came out and he was a little bit embarrassed,” she said.
“Sort of like ‘oh I’m a bit sore and sorry for myself’.
“He’s exhausted, absolutely exhausted, and his feet are really sore.
“He’s just mentally and physically very drained.”
