‘Govt must work with health’

Brian Owler says it’s time for the government to stop complaining about Labor’s Medicare scare and start rebuilding relations with health organisations.

The former Australian Medical Association president said the government was offside with pretty much every health group including the AMA.

“I am hoping that after this federal election when they look at the result, they stop blaming the scare campaign and lies but actually look at the policies themselves, work with the medical profession and come up with much better policies,” he told Sky News.

Prof Owler said Labor’s Medicare scare wasn’t overreach as there was a move to privatise, though that was denied by his successor Dr Michael Gannon during the campaign.

He said this did raise suspicion, particularly considering the government’s history of poor health policy.

“What they need to do now is go back and try and rebuild that trust on health policy.”
