Man charged over Ahmad shooting murder

Man charged over Sydney gangland shooting

A man has been charged with planning the murder of gangland figure Mahmoud “Brownie” Ahmad, who was gunned down in Sydney’s south-west earlier this year.

Mr Ahmad, 39, was shot dead on the street at Greenacre at 9.30pm on April 27 in what police described as another brazen and callous murder in Sydney’s ongoing gang wars.

The matter was initially investigated by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad under Strike Force Betta.

The investigation subsequently formed part of ongoing inquiries by Task Force Erebus into fatal shootings and criminal activities by organised crime networks across Sydney.

Detectives arrested a 49-year-old man during a police operation at Campsie on May 2.

Later that day, police raided a home at Wetherill Park and seized more than 25 kilograms of methylamphetamine (ice), with an estimated potential street value of more than $22 million.

Officers also seized $200,000 cash and cloned number plates.

The man was charged with several drug and criminal group offences and remains before the courts.

Task Force Erebus investigators laid two additional charges on Friday – one count of accessory before the fact to murder, and accessory after the fact to murder.

Police will allege in court the man was involved in planning Mr Ahmad’s murder.

He remains in custody and will appear at Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday.

The development comes just a day after former Lone Wolf bikie Yusuf Nazlioglu died in hospital after being shot in a car park in Sydney’s west.

There have been 14 fatal gangland shootings in Sydney in the last two years.
