An Australian man visiting Lebanon has reportedly been killed along with his wife and brother during an Israeli airstrike on a house.

Ibrahim Bazzi, 27, flew to Lebanon about a week ago to visit his wife Shorouq Hammoud – who was recently granted an Australian visa – and return home with her to begin their life in Sydney.

The electrician and construction worker from St George, in south Sydney, had reportedly married in Lebanon three years ago and had been setting up their future.

The couple and Ibrahim’s brother Ali Bazzi died during an Israeli bombing of a Lebanese town close to the border on Tuesday night (local time), their family said.

The Australian man’s brother Ali has been named as a fighter for Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group and ally of Hamas that is fighting Israel along the border.

There is no suggestion Ibrahim or his wife were members of Hezbollah.

Exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated along the Lebanese border since the Israel-Gaza war began on October 7.

Hezbollah launched the most rockets and weaponised drones against Israel on Wednesday (local time) that it has in a single day since the clashes began, according to Reuters.

The Israeli airstrike reportedly targeted the town of Bint Jbeil, about two kilometres from the border in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah has broad support.

The Israeli military said one of its jets had struck a Hezbollah military site overnight in Lebanon, according to Reuters.

The Bazzi brothers’ family said the airstrike hit a house.

A funeral was held for the trio on Wednesday (local time) in Lebanon amid a public outpouring of grief and shock. Their caskets were draped in the Hezbollah flag.

Israeli airstrikes and shelling have killed more than 100 Hezbollah fighters and nearly two dozen civilians, including children, elderly and several journalists.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was investigating the reports of the Australian’s death.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, the department said it was aware of reports of a death of an Australia citizen and was seeking confirmation.

Australia’s Smartraveller website states there is a possibility of an increase in armed conflict in Lebanon that could affect wider parts of the country.

“Daily military action is occurring in southern Lebanon, including rocket and missile fire, as well as airstrikes,” it states.

“The situation could escalate quickly.”

The ABC said it had spoken to Ibrahim’s uncle, Mohamed Kahmees, who described him as “a beautiful boy”.

“He went to get his wife from Lebanon for a better life … and then this happened,” he said.

“I’m really in a state of shock still.”

His wife’s cousin, Mohamed Hammoud, said the family was numb.

“My family is devastated. My family is in disbelief,” he said.

“We were expecting to meet and greet them here and welcome her to Australia and now that’s not to be … utter disbelief.”
