Support for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament has taken another hit, with the latest Newspoll showing the ‘No’ campaign has taken a 53-38 lead less than six weeks before polling day.

The exclusive online poll of 1200 voters conducted between August 28 and September 1 found a three-point decline in the ‘Yes’ vote [and a five-point rise in the ‘No’ vote] since July, when released in The Australian newspaper on Sunday night.

As support foundered among men [down 12 points to 33 per cent] and the 35 to 49 age group, the only demographic remaining in favour was the 18 to 34 age group.

When applied across all age groups, the poll found two-thirds of over-65s, 61 per cent of 50 to 64-year-olds and 51 per cent of those in the 35 to 49 age group intended to vote ‘No’.

The city-based vote switched in favour of a ‘No’ vote [48-42], with the undecided vote narrowing from 11 per cent to 9 per cent.

It is the first time that opposition to the proposal to be put to voters in the October 14 referendum has achieved a majority.

Noted psephologist Kevin Bonham noted on X (formerly Twitter): ‘‘It may seem startling but it’s more of the same.’’

ABC analyst Casey Briggs concurred, tweeting the result ‘‘keeps our polling average on basically its same trajectory’’.

The poll confirmed officially that the Albanese government’s honeymoon period is officially over since its election in May 2022.

The result coincided with a one-point fall in primary vote support for Labor [to 35 per cent, yet still 2.4 points above the election result] and a three-point rise in primary vote for the Coalition to 37 per cent.

But Labor retains a 53-47 lead on a two-party-preferred basis.

The Greens lifted a point to 13 per cent, minor parties and independents fell three points to 8 per cent, and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation remained steady on 7 per cent.

The Prime Minister retains a healthy advantage over Opposition Leader Peter Dutton in terms of approval ratings and preferred PM.

The news comes on the same day that singer John Farnham gave permission for his anthemic song You’re the Voice to become the soundtrack for the ‘Yes’ campaign, saying he hopes it will help change lives.
