Tourist walks over Rome’s Trevi Fountain to fill water bottle

A female tourist was filmed stepping across Rome’s culturally prized Trevi Fountain in her sandals to fill a water bottle.

The woman inched her way across the famous stone structure in full view of appalled tourists and other onlookers.

She then gingerly leaned forward while trying to maintain her balance and collected the spring water pouring from one of the fountain’s spouts.

The video was reportedly filmed about a month ago but has been gaining traction as it circulates online.

A guard further up the street is seen blowing a whistle when she is alerted to the woman in the blue shirt and white pants.

She stalks towards the fountain and speaks to the tourist before taking her away.

The Trevi Fountain is a Baroque structure built in the 18th century and one of the most famous landmarks of Rome.

It was built at the site of an ancient aqueduct which dates back to 19 BC and was at the meeting point of three streets.

Tourists can be fined 500 euro for entering the fountain which draws massive crowds daily.

Italy has been bombarded by international tourists post-pandemic, as have many European countries.

Visitors to the Trevi Fountain traditionally throw a coin into the sparkling waters, which nets about 1.5 million Euros annually for the Catholic charity Caritas.

In May, climate activists turned the famous fountain’s clear waters into a black pool.

The Last Generation group climbed into the landmark and poured a vegetable-based carbon liquid into the water.

Within 20 minutes the protestors were pulled out and escorted away by police.

The environmental group said the carbon liquid used for the protest did not damage the fountain.

But Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri said the clean-up would “cost time, effort and water, because this is a fountain which uses recirculating water”.

“We now have to empty it, and throw away 300,000 litres of water,” he said at the time.
