ALP increases lead over Coalition to 55-45 in latest Newspoll

Coalition holds onto Queensland seat of Fadden

Minor parties and independents have emerged as the winners in the latest Newspoll, which found the primary vote for Labor and the Coalition was falling.

The exclusive online survey of 1570 voters across Australia, which was commissioned for The Australian newspaper and released on Sunday night, found the primary vote for the Anthony Albanese-led ALP fell two per cent to 36 per cent.

But the Peter Dutton-led Coalition parties failed to make an impression on prospective voters between July 12 and 15, experiencing a one-point fall to 34 per cent.

Interestingly the result, which translates to Labor improving its two party-preferred margin by two points to 55-45, is largely attributed to the waning influence of the major parties.

It comes after the Liberal Party secured victory in the Fadden byelection on Saturday night and a busy month in which the Indigenous Voice to Parliament and Robodebt have taken the attention of the major parties rather than addressing concerns about cost-of-living pressures.

In contrast, the Greens’ campaigning on rental affordability helped it lift its support to 12 per cent.

Support for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation also rose a point to 7 per cent, while other minor parties and independents commanded an equivalent one-point rise to 11 per cent.

Preference flows from the minor parties and independents, which equates to 30 per cent overall, strongly favour the government.

Mr Albanese continues to lead the way in the preferred PM category, lifting two points to 54 per cent as his opponent Mr Dutton fell three points to 29 per cent.
