Madonna postpones world tour after ‘serious’ health battle

Madonna has postponed her world tour after she was hospitalised in intensive care with a “serious” bacterial infection.

The global superstar spent several days under the care of doctors, with  reports she was “rushed” to a New York hospital on Saturday (local time).

In January, Madonna announced her ‘Celebration’ tour would run from July 15, 2023, to January 30, 2024, starting in Vancouver and touring North America and Europe.

The 84-show spectacular would be her 12th tour and her first in three years since Madame X, before the pandemic.

On Wednesday (US time), the 64-year-old’s manager Guy Oseary announced on social media that Madonna was “still under medical care”.

He said her health was improving and the mum-of-six was expected to make a full recovery.

“On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several-day stay in the ICU,” he posted to Instagram.

“Her health is improving. However, she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.

“At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.

“We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”

After the news broke, celebrity news site Page Six reported that Madonna had been found “unresponsive” and rushed to hospital.

“Madonna was found unresponsive and rushed to a New York City hospital Saturday,” it said.

“We hear the ‘Material Girl’…was intubated for at least one night before having the tube removed – and she is now alert and recovering.

“We’re also told that her daughter Lourdes Leon was by her side throughout the ordeal.”

In her last Instagram post a week ago, Madonna shared a series of photos captioned “the calm before the storm” as she rehearsed for the tour.

The seven-time Grammy winner is known for hits such as Like A Virgin and Material Girl over a four-decade career.
