A Gold Coast man who allegedly punched another man in the face, killing him, has been charged over his death.

Michael Hayes, 39, died at Gold Coast University Hospital on Thursday morning, days after the incident outside Sanctuary Cove’s Destino Wine and Cocktail Bar about 9.20pm on Saturday.

Mr Hayes had left the restaurant and was seen talking to a man, who a short time later struck him to the head, causing critical injuries.

The perpetrator fled the scene on foot.

On Thursday, police arrested a 24-year-old Hope Island man at a Maroochydore address, charging him with unlawful striking causing death following the alleged serious assault.

He has been charged with one count of unlawful striking causing death and is due to appear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday.

Police are calling for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island areas between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday to come forward.

Operation Victor Lacerta is under way as police continue their investigations.
