‘If we knew you were gay, you would not get in’

A West Australian school has come under fire after a seven-year old student at Foundation Christian College was forbidden from discussing her gay fathers, or homosexuality in general.

The student was told she would not have been permitted to enrol had the school known her parents were gay, according to the Mandurah Mail.

Brendan, the girl’s father, was invited to a meeting at school and surprised to learn he would have to tell his daughter not to mention himself or his partner during school hours.

“I was told that they don’t promote ‘gay’ at the school”, he said.

“She could mention my name, but she couldn’t talk about us being gay or relating to us as a couple, so pretty much to a seven-year-old, we were forced to say to [my daughter] that she wasn’t allowed to talk about Daddy or [my partner] at all.”

Brendan claims the school’s principal, Andrew Newhouse, said the school would be forced to ask his daughter to leave if a parent complained.

Principal Andrew Newhouse told the Mandurah Mail that Brendan had fooled the school in his application.

“When the father submitted his application for enrolment, he did so with his ex-wife as part of the process,” he said.

According to Brendan, Mr Newhouse said “if we knew you were gay at the interview you would never have got in this school.”

Brendan eventually decided to withdraw his daughter from Foundation Christian College, which received $5.2 million in taxpayer funding in 2013, and enrol her in a public school.

Brendan said his daughter was confused and upset about having to leave the school and her friends.

“I carry a lot of guilt and I hate that my daughter has to deal with her dad not being accepted,” he added.
