More than 20 people have been charged in connection with online drug trafficking during a two-month operation.

Over the course of the operation, police seized methamphetamine (‘ice’), cannabis, LSD, cocaine, MDMA (ecstasy) and GHB – with an estimated potential street value of $32,000 – along with thousands of dollars in cash and stolen property.

They included a 22-year-old Homebush man who was arrested in Haymarket, Sydney, on August 12, with a police search of his vehicle and home allegedly locating ice, cannabis and cash.

Charges included supply of a prohibited drug, possessing a prohibited drug, and dealing with proceeds of crime.

He was refused bail and will appear before Central Local Court August 25.

A 23-year-old Macquarie Fields woman was arrested near Central Railway Station on July 23, with police prosecutors to allege that during a search of the woman and her vehicle, officers discovered cannabis, cash and stolen property, which was seized for further forensic analysis.

The woman was bailed to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on September 7.

Redfern RES Commander Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bell said the illicit drug marketplace had changed in the age of technology.

“Technology has allowed drug suppliers to shift their focus out of public view and away from particular geographic areas; enabling them to engage with users in the online environment,” Det Ch Insp Bell said.

“This criminal enterprise represents a unique challenge for law enforcement in their ability to infiltrate these spaces and detect drug transactions.”

The operation was launched in June 2015 to target the online supply of illicit drugs, specifically via classified advertising websites, social media platforms and the ‘dark web.’
