Change of government likely in Victoria

The Victorian coalition government led by Premier Denis Napthine looks sets for a crushing defeat in the November state election, with the Labor Party opening up a wining lead just weeks from the state election.

According to the latest Newspoll published in The Australian, the Coalition government languishes behind Labor on a two-party-preferred basis, 46-54 per cent.

Labor also enjoys a higher primary vote than the Napthine government on a narrow margin of 41-39 per cent.

Despite the poor poll results, Dr Napthine is still ahead of Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews as preferred premier on a large 13-point gap, 47-34 per cent.

More voters are also happy with Dr Napthine’s performance, with 46 per cent of those polled satisfied with the Liberal premier.

Only 36 per cent of Victorians are satisfied with Mr Andrew’s performance as Labor leader.

The Greens saw their primary vote drop from a high 16 per cent in July to 13 per cent over the weekend, but are still tipped to pick up three to four inner-city seats.

Despite the mixed poll results, 47 per cent of people surveyed believe Labor will win at the November 29 election.
