In the past decade or so, the master or main bedroom has morphed from a straight-forward sleeping area with basic wardrobe and a possible ensuite to a luxurious relaxation zone or parents’ retreat complete with a range of hotel-worthy features.

These include balconies or covered alfresco terraces, fitted walk-in robes with Hollywood-style dressing room mirrors, built-in entertainment units, study nooks as well as opulent ensuites with his and her vanities, large mirrors, spa baths, double showers and upmarket tiling.

Orbit Homes director Paul Millson says the evolution of the master bedroom can be attributed to the increasing affluence of Australians and the desire of parents for their own private space in which they can relax and indulge in a bit of pampering.

“Obviously, it comes back to those who can afford it,” Mr Millson says.

“The more affluent can buy a home with main bedroom that includes an ensuite, private balcony, large dressing room-style walk-in robes. It’s that hotel suite style set-up.

“People, usually the parents, want style and opulence, and when they go to the bedroom they want it to be their own space – a retreat area where they can wind down.

“Now it’s more than just a bedroom; it’s a dedicated private space where people can relax, read a book, watch TV or jump into the bath.”

The Orbit director believes the main bedroom may evolve further and include other luxurious features such as a kitchenette or a bar.

Dennis Family Homes chief executive officer Peter Levinge explains that about 15 to 20 years ago the main bedroom functioned solely as a bedroom and there would be only one bathroom in a house.

“The first stage of the evolution was the addition of ensuites and walk-in robes which became a standard feature in floorplan designs,” Mr Levinge says.

“In more recent times we have seen the continuation of the trend towards larger and more luxurious master suites.”

“We have seen ensuites progress from a small space occupied by a shower and toilet to now have sufficient room for a large shower, double vanities and often a separate toilet.

“The expanded master suites of today also often include both his and hers walk-in robes, rather than just a single storage space.”

The Dennis spokesman says this demand is being driven by the desire of each generation for a better home, “even at the entry level of the market”.

“Previous generations of homeowners had been accustomed to working their way up from a modest starting point, but contemporary buyers have a different level of expectation and tend to want the best available features from the outset.”
