Muslims from around the world are turning to an Australian company to help fulfil a yearly religious rite.

As part of the faith, an animal is sacrificed after Hajj and the meat consumed by those less fortunate.

Fletcher International Exports spokesman, Graham Lyon, says the abattoir in partnership with a government charity of the United Arab Emirates and Muslim Aid Australia, has just completed a large slaughter and the meat’s now being packaged.

“Funds come in from Muslim families all over the world, they buy one or two heads each,” he said.

“They come together to be 30,000 or 40,000 heads being slaughtered in four days and then cut up and packed and shipped off to more than 10 countries this year.

“We understood that these charities and the Muslim community needed a way to efficiently slaughter these animals and get them to people in need.

“So the systems we have here for quality and halal allow Fletcher to do that effectively and hence our relationship with the Muslim charities.”

He says much of this year’s kill will go to Syrian families.

“The year of the Indonesian tsunami we sent a lot of Aceh, the year more recently of the Pakistani earthquakes we sent a lot of meat to Pakistan.

“We’re always sending meat to places like Bosnia, Palestine and now the Syrian refugees in Jordan that have been displaced by the conflict.”
