More Australian hotels are making pets welcome as guests, and – perhaps surprisingly – many in the luxury category welcome your four-legged friends with treats galore.

Here’s where you’ll find a bed for both you and your canine companion.

New South Wales

Sydney
Vibe Hotel, Rushcutters Bay

Not only does Vibe have two pet-friendly rooms with balconies, dog beds and water bowls, but you can dine with your furry companion on its “Doggy Deck” terrace at The Storehouse on the Park.

Dogs even have their own special animal nutritionist- developed ‘dogustation’ menu, including puppy-cinos, ‘pawtein’ balls and sesame pup wafers.

Cost: $50 a night, on top of room rates

The Langham Hotel

Pets indulging in the Langham’s “Pampered Pet Program” have their own in-room dining menu (although they may need some assistance with ordering) featuring Angus tartare, or roast chicken with egg and steamed oatmeal.

Rooms come with beds, pet collars, food and drink bowls and tennis balls. Pet sitting and dog-walking are available on request.

Cost: $120 extra a night, on top of room rates

Pier One Sydney Harbour

Plenty of walkies can be had around the historic Rocks area from Pier One Hotel. Pet-friendly rooms open to the pier and include a trampoline bed and water bowl.

There are also no size restrictions on your room-mate.

Ovolo Woolloomooloo and Darling Harbour

The Ovolo chain likes to be known as a ‘hotel disruptor’ and all its hotels across Australia are pet-friendly as of May 2019. It generously allows two dogs per room.

Incentives at both perfectly-positioned Sydney locations include plush dog beds and bowls, and designer ‘doggy bags’ full of treats.

Cost: $80 extra a night, on top of room rates

The Larmont Sydney by Lancemore

The Larmont Sydney has a pet-friendly floor with four courtyard rooms furnished with beds, food and water bowls and a treat. Rushcutters Bay Park is nearby for a walk, and there are a couple of dog-friendly cafes close by too.

The Citadines Connect, Mascot

Quirky yet stylish, this is perfect if you and your canine or feline have an early morning flight or late arrival (or just want to enjoy a bit of plane spotting).

Pet-friendly rooms have courtyards, food and water bowls and pets are welcome in all public spaces except when breakfast is being served.

Cost: $55 a night, on top of room rates

Regional NSW
The Fairmont Resort and Spa, Blue Mountains

So popular was this resort’s first pet-friendly room that it has added a second. Both have with private courtyards and direct access to the gardens, a pet bed, food and water bowls.

Bookings are made directly through the hotel.

Cost: $60 a stay, on top of room rates

voco, Kirkton Park, Hunter Valley

The voco has two rooms to accommodate pets under 20 kilograms, with gated indoor and outdoor areas, and a gate opening straight into the 28-hectare estate.

Pets can dine with their owners on the hotel’s pizzeria patio and there’s a dedicated pets’ menu (a room service menu is in the offing).

Queensland

Brisbane
The Ovolo, Spring Hill and Fortitude Valley

As part of the Ovolo’s ‘V.I.Pooch’ package, both Brisbane hotels are dog friendly, with rooms at Valley Ovolo also featuring balconies.

Both supply plush dog beds, eating and drinking mats, food and water bowls and designer ‘doggy bags’ with toys and snacks.

Cost: $80 a night, on top of room rates

The W, Brisbane

The glamorous W Hotel welcomes felines and canines (under 18 kilograms). Pet-friendly rooms come with litter trays for kitties, as well as pet beds, food and water bowls, toys and treats.

There’s also plenty of information on hand about local walks and nearby parks.

Cost: $50 a night, plus a one-off $150 cleaning fee

Delightful, with a woof: The W, Brisbane.

The Balfour Hotel

Two suites are put aside for well-behaved small to medium-sized pooches at The Balfour. It’s in a quiet inner-city suburban street, but within walking distance of cafes and shopping, as well as the CBD.

There’s also New Farm park nearby – perfect for riverside walks or socialising in the off-leash area.

Cost: From $499 a night, including dog accommodation and breakfast

The Mantra on Edward, Brisbane

Introduced in mid-2019, the pet-friendly rooms at this inner-city hotel are already proving popular. Only bookable direct, the pet-friendly rooms come with kitty litter, feeding bowls and clean up bags.

Ground-floor rooms also have large balconies.

Cost: From $10 a night (on top of room rate) for long stays, plus a refundable security deposit of $500

Sunshine Coast
Clovelly Estate, Montville

Humans will love the award-winning restaurant and distant ocean views at this luxury hotel, while dogs will revel in the open spaces and great walking nearby the resort’s dog-friendly three-bedroom cottage.

Inclusions for your pet are a dog bed and blanket, lead and clean-up bags, food and water bowls and a long-lasting bone.

Cost: From $1399 a night, including breakfast.

Tamarind Retreat, Maleny

Who needs Bali? In a rainforest-like setting in the lush Sunshine Coast hinterland, the upmarket Tamarind provides pet guests with a plush dog bed with blanket, food and water bowls, a treat and lead for walkies.

Cost: From $699 a night, including breakfast.

Elsewhere in Queensland
Alure, Stanthorpe

The Granite Belt is a perfect destination to visit with your dog, with lots of great walks and plenty of pet-friendly activities. The indulgent pet package at Alure includes a plush dog bed and its own terry-towelling bath robe, bowls and a goody bag.

Cost: $50 per dog a night, on top of room rate

Sarayi Boutique Hotel, Palm Cove

Pet are welcomed with genuine enthusiasm at this idyllically situated hotel on Palm Cove’s wave-lapped Esplanade. Pet-friendly rooms have large courtyards and dogs can dine with their owners at the hotel’s al fresco restaurants.

You’ll need to bring your own beds and bowls.

Victoria

Melbourne
Element Melbourne, Richmond

Five rooms are allocated for four-legged friends here, set up with comfortable (sustainably created) beds, plus water and food bowls.

There is also a pooch-friendly minibar loaded with dog-friendly snacks. One of Melbourne’s most popular off-leash parks, Fairview Park, is just a short stroll away.

Right in the heart of the CBD, there’ll be plenty for you and your dog (or dogs, two are allowed per room) to explore.

Ovolo Nishi

You and your dog might find it difficult to leave this sustainably designed, chic and well-positioned boutique hotel that also comes with a well-regarded restaurant.

Formerly Hotel Hotel before being taken over by the Ovolo group, everything is provided here as part of the V.I.Pooch package, from plush beds to treats.

Tasmania

Stillwater Seven, Launceston

It’s a well-kept secret, generally passed on by word of mouth, but small dogs are welcome at the classy, freshly-opened Stillwater Seven.

There’s a room with pet-friendly courtyard and extras, including bedding, food, and treats on arrival. Doggos are served afternoon tea along with their owners.

South Australia

Adelaide
The Hilton, Adelaide

Dogs (only one per room) up to 34 kilograms are welcome at the Hilton Adelaide, where a handful of rooms caters especially for them with dog beds and water bowls provided.

An onsite running track plus plenty of interesting places to explore within walking distance should take care of any excess energy.

Cost: $90 extra per stay on top of room rate, plus $500 refundable deposit
