An alert has been issued after a person infected with measles attended Melbourne Airport during the school holidays.

The returned overseas traveller passed through the international terminal and the Qantas domestic terminal from 6.20am to 9.50am on July 3 before flying to Queensland.

Victoria’s health department says anyone who was at terminal one or terminal two during that time should monitor for symptoms until July 21.

Queensland’s Department of Health previously issued a measles alert relating to a person who travelled from Melbourne to Brisbane on flight QF610 on July 3.

A list of exposure sites identified in Brisbane between July 3 and July 14 included shops, a service station and a bakery.

Measles is highly infectious and the illness usually starts with symptoms such as a cough, conjunctivitis, runny nose and fever followed by a rash on the face which spreads to the rest of the body.

Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton said recent cases of the disease had occurred in people who were not fully vaccinated and travelled overseas or were in contact with recently returned travellers.

Professor Sutton urged anyone planning on heading overseas to ensure they were immunised against measles, mumps and rubella.
