More Taylor Swift tickets drop – but there’s a catch

Can Taylor Swift really help the Australian economy?

Swifties desperate to see their idol in Australia next year will get another chance, with the pending release of some “limited” second-chance tickets.

Ticketek has released additional tickets to Taylor Swift’s Sydney and Melbourne concerts – but some of them come with a major catch.

“It’s no secret that Taylor Swift The Eras Tour is the hottest ticket around, with unprecedented demand breaking records in Australia. Australian fans now have another opportunity to secure tickets in Melbourne and Sydney,” the ticketing agent said on Thursday.

“Due to the demand, additional tickets – including partially-obstructed side view tickets – will be released.”

Extra tickets for Swift’s three shows in Melbourne and four in Sydney will go on sale through Ticketek on Friday, with prices starting at $79.90 and ranging as high as $379.90. They drop at 10am for the concert dates at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, and 4pm for the MCG dates.

Thursday’s update follows tickets to all of Swift’s Australian concerts selling out earlier this year – more than a million fans are estimated to have flooded Ticketek’s website when they went on sale.

VIP packages, which cost as much as $1249, were released first to American Express VIP buyers in June. The site promptly crashed under the demand.

Hours later, some tickets were already relisted on scalping websites – at a hefty mark-up.

The unprecedented demand led the Victorian and NSW governments to declare Swift’s concerts as major events, to try to limit the scalping.

In NSW, anti-scalping legislation means tickets to major events cannot be sold on for more than 10 per cent above their original price. The maximum penalties for breaching the state’s scalping laws are $110,000 for a corporation or $22,000 for an individual.

In Victoria, which has similar laws, penalties range from $908 up to $545,220.

Ticketek will also manage official resales of Eras Tour tickets – and has a warning for Swifties.

“We have not allocated any tickets for the Taylor Swift The Eras Tour to unauthorised resellers (which include but are not limited to Viagogo; Stubhub; Ticketfinders; The Ticket Merchant; Worldticketshop; and Tixel) or via websites such as eBay, Gumtree and social media Buy Swap Sell pages),” a warning on its website states.

“To make sure you pay the correct ticket price and receive valid tickets, you must purchase via Ticketek Australia.”

The official resales begin on November 24. See Ticketek for more information.

Swift initially announced two Melbourne dates and three in Sydney – her first concerts Down Under since 2018. Extra shows were added to her Australian schedule after the overwhelming demand.

The singer is pocketing the bulk of the money grossed from shows on her global Eras Tour – according to Forbes, she is personally earning between $US10 million-$US13 million ($15.6 million-$20.2 million) from every stop, for every night.

Taylor Swift plays three shows at the MCG in Melbourne from February 16-18, and four at Sydney’s Accor Stadium from February 23-26.
