Margot Robbie and her blockbuster movie Barbie have claimed a haul of prizes at the AACTA Awards after being overlooked for key Oscar nominations while two small-screen hits dominated local categories.

Australian TV shows The Newsreader and Deadloch each won five Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) awards, while Talk to Me took out best film and best direction in film.

Rebel Wilson hosted the glittering Gold Coast award show with Australian Hollywood royalty Cate Blanchett and Simon Baker among the stars walking the red carpet.

Bluey again won best children’s program and best reality program went to MasterChef Australia.

Best comedy performer went to the late Cal Wilson for her work on The Great Australian Bake Off, and The Matildas’ performance at the 2023 Women’s Football World Cup was chosen as Australia’s favourite sporting moment.

Best documentary went to John Farnham: Finding The Voice.

Some 300,000 people cast votes in the audience choice categories, a record for the awards.

Succession‘s Sarah Snook continued her run of wins this awards season by taking out best actress in a series in the international category, and Poor Things was chosen for best screenplay in film.

Robbie won best lead actress in film and the trailblazer award in recognition of her work in front of the camera and the success of her production company LuckyChap.

Barbie took home a total of six awards, with Ryan Gosling awarded best supporting actor in film for his performance as Ken.
