Emergency call for Matthew Perry released

'Friends' star Matthew Perry found dead

The dispatch call to emergency services after the discovery of actor Matthew Perry has been released, as more details about the Friends star’s untimely death emerge.

Also on Monday (Australian time), the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said determining the cause of Perry’s death would require additional investigative steps.

It has officially updated its online record, listing it as “deferred”.

“In cases where the cause of death cannot be determined at the time of autopsy, a deferred certificate will be issued until additional studies have been completed,” the LA coroner’s guidelines state.

No foul play was suspected, a law enforcement source told CNN. However, the incident remains under investigation by the LAPD’s robbery-homicide division.

TMZ reported on Saturday that there was a call from 54-year-old Perry’s home for first responders to come for someone in cardiac arrest, after the actor was found unresponsive. It said no drugs were found at the scene.

The dispatch audio, obtained by TMZ, refers to “drowning”. In the 15-second clip, a man says, “Agent 23. Rescue 23. EMS 9 on the radio. In response to the drowning”.

Also on Monday, radio and TV host Billy Bush said Perry’s regular pickleball partner had told him the star left their game on Saturday early after complaining of tiredness.

“[Pickleball] regulated his days,” Bush posted on Instagram.

“I spoke to the woman he played with this morning and every morning. She is in shock, adored Matt … she said he had been fatigued today and over the past week. A little more than usual.”

Perry’s final haunting Instagram post has also been revealed.

“Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I’m Mattman,” he wrote, alongside a picture from his spa last week.

The latest developments came as Perry’s family, friends and fellow celebrities mourned the passing of the wise-cracking star who played Chandler Bing in the 1990s sitcom Friends.

“Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend,” Perry’s family told People.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” the family said. They also thanked his fans: “You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”

Perry was born in Massachusetts and largely raised in Canada after his parents divorced. He played Chandler Bing for 10 seasons on Friends.

His co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Courtney Cox – have yet to publicly comment his death.

Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright have released a statement to CNN, saying they were “shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing”.

“It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives,” they wrote.

“He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.

“We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart…This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

Friends aired 236 episodes from 1994 to 2004, and remains widely popular in syndication. It made international celebrities out of the castmates, who played a close-knit group of young adults who spent time at each other’s apartments and at Central Perk, a fictional Manhattan cafe.

The official Friends webpage on Instagram said: “We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was a true gift to us all. Our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all of his fans.”

Singer Adele gave a tearful tribute to Perry and his Chandler character during her Las Vegas show on Saturday night.

“I’ll remember that character for the rest of my life,” she said as the audience cheered, according to the LA Times. “He’s probably the best comedic actor of all time.”

Many celebrities shared their thoughts on social media this weekend, such as actor Alyssa Milano, who described Perry as, “always the funniest person in the room.”

“Matty, remember when we used to go play bingo at that church in the valley?” she wrote. “You made me laugh that painful kind of laugh. A cry laugh. You made me cry-laugh.”

Milano starred in the 1988 movie Dance ’til Dawn with Perry.

While Perry’s comedic side made him famous, his personal life was dark as he suffered from alcohol and drug addictions, including painkillers. He underwent several stints in rehab, including while he was starring in Friends.

Perry wrote about his struggles for sobriety in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which was published last year.

In his introduction to the book, he wrote, “Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.”
