An overjoyed Kylie Minogue has celebrated her return to the top of the charts with her ninth No.1 album.

The Australian singer’s 16th studio album – the dance floor-focused Tension – has secured more than 50,000 chart sales in the few days since its release last Friday.

So popular has it been that Tension has outsold all of the other albums in the top five list combined, according to the Official Charts Company.

“Baby can’t you feel that my heart is beating … Tension is no.1 in the UK and Australia!!” an ecstatic Minogue captioned a video on Instagram at the weekend, showing her dancing for joy.

“Thank you to everyone who bought it, streamed it and made it yours … I am in awe of the love and support you’ve shown me. I will hold on to this moment forever!!”

The record features Minogue’s electro dance anthem Padam Padam, which became a viral sensation on TikTok earlier this year and went on to spend four weeks in the British top 10, becoming her highest-charting song in the UK in more than 10 years.

Tension is also Minogue’s eighth ARIA chart-topper, and her fourth in succession.

Minogue already has 16 ARIA Awards from her 35-year recording career. She is likely to add to that at the 2023 ARIA Awards in November, where’s she’s nominated for four categories – best solo artist, best pop release, best independent release and song of the year, all for Padam Padam.

Tension joins Minogue’s bumper list of chart-topping albums, which includes her 1988 debut Kylie, 1989’s Enjoy Yourself, 1992 collection Greatest Hits, 2001’s Fever, 2010’s Aphrodite, 2018’s Golden, 2019’s Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection and 2020’s Disco.

The success of Tension has puts Minogue, sometimes dubbed the Princess of Pop, alongside artists such as Bob Dylan and Coldplay who also have nine No.1 albums each.

Taylor Swift and Madonna are the only female solo artists with more chart-topping albums, with 10 and 12 respectively.

Minogue’s charts resurgence coincides with an upcoming residency in Las Vegas. In November, she will follow in the footsteps of Celine Dion, Adele, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, and others with a stint at the newly curated Voltaire club inside the The Venetian Resort.

Minogue will perform to intimate audiences of 1000 – and potentially rake in a multimillion-dollar payday, including merchandise and bonuses. Her first 15 shows sold out within minutes, prompting the addition of 10 more.

“I was thinking years ago, I want to do it when I’m younger like, I don’t want to do it when I’m at the sunset of my career,” the Australian star told Variety in August.

“I think I’ve got it right somewhere in the middle, where I feel like I’ve earned the right to and have the experience to really enjoy being there.”

Fans have been told to expect a mix of “intimate moments” and “flashy stuff”.

“I want it to be the kind of essence of what a Kylie show has become, enough glamour and abandon,” Minogue said.

“I’ve got some versions of songs that have not been heard, like reinterpretations of songs, which is exciting. Live bed dances, amazing costumes. That’s the base and then we’ll see what surprises we can come up with.”
