Elton John, Debbie Harry, Cat Stevens and a host of other rockers of old have proved the enduring power of their musical fame via stunning performances at the iconic Glastonbury Festival over the weekend.

The incredible line-up offered something for everyone this year and saw John, Harry, Stevens, Chrissie Hynde and Candi Staton grace the stage past the age of 70.

Not only were their performances proof they have all still got it, but a reminder that their music has stood the test of time.

Elton John, 76, closed the festival and it marked his final stop in the UK on his farewell tour.

I never thought I’d play Glastonbury – and here I am,” John said.

“It’s a very special and emotional night for me as it may be my last show in England, in Great Britain.”

Sir Elton’s incredible career has spanned decades and he played hit after hit while at the festival, bringing on many other well-known artists to help him say goodbye to the UK including Rina Sawayama, The Killers lead singer Brandon Flowers, and Jacob Lusk.

Social media was full of praise for Sir Elton following his set, with one fan saying it was “exhilarating”.

Before John graced the stage, Blondie performed in front of the masses, with many still believing Harry is the “coolest woman” on the planet.

Harry will turn 78 next week, but she still put on a hell of a performance at Glastonbury.

The Guardian‘s Ben Beaumont-Thomas noted that Harry might not be able to hit the notes like she used to, but she can still put on a “riveting” performance.

As if Harry and Sir Elton weren’t enough, Yusuf Islam, also known as Cat Stevens, performed on the Pyramid Stage.

“I’m just thinking back to the first time I nervously walked up to a microphone in a small folk club in Soho, in 1965,” the 74-year-old said on Twitter.

“Now walking onto the great Pyramid Stage of Glastonbury. What a journey.”

With songs like Wild World and Cat’s in the Cradle, it’s safe to say his music resonated with any generation.

On social media, many people reflected on his incredible career. Yusuf paid homage to George Harrison by doing a cover of The Beatles’ Here Comes The Sun.

He said Harrison was an inspiration of his, and the crowd cheered as he played the opening notes to the song.

Then there was Candi Staton, who is 83. She played You Got The Love, which has been covered by Florence + the Machine.

Her voice did not waver and her set was all the proof some people need to confirm that age is just a number.

The soul and spark from Candi Staton at 83 – that’s EIGHTY THREE – years old is amazing,” someone said on Twitter.

Lil Nas X the ‘perfect’ act before Elton

It would be pretty tough playing at the same festival as absolute legends like Elton John, Blondie, Cat Stevens and Candi Staton.

However, new and young artists also brought their own magic to Glastonbury.

Lil Nas X was wedged in between Blondie and Sir Elton on the Pyramid Stage.

Writing for NME, Sophie Williams said his performance was a “watershed moment for queer pop” and gave it five stars.

In a bombastic show that includes a stage kiss and fierce choreography, the 24-year-old still proves himself to be a uniquely human star,” Williams wrote.

One person on Twitter suggested Lil Nas X was possibly the best person to go on before Sir Elton.

“Lil Nas X is the PERFECT opener for Elt,” they said.

“The camp, the glitter, the dancing men in tight glitter, the immense, witty, glorious gay of it all. The difference is he can snog a man on stage and everyone cheers. I’m standing in the Pyramid field and it is rammmmmed.”

There was a very touching moment when Lewis Capaldi took the stage. The singer recently announced he would be taking a break from performing to look after his mental health.

In the past, Capaldi has been open about his struggles with anxiety and his Tourette’s diagnosis.

At one point during his set, he struggled to finish his song, Someone You Loved, and that’s when the crowd stepped in and sang it for him.

Lights go out for Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey also performed and there was remarkable moment that happened after her sound was cut.

Del Rey started half an hour late and told her fans it was all due to her hair taking too long to do.

However, she was the final act on Saturday night, so she was running the risk of her sound being cut due to Glastonbury’s curfew.

I’m sorry, my hair takes so long. If they cut the power, let’s keep going,” she said on stage.

The power was cut, but Del Rey managed to get hundreds of thousands of people to sing her hit song, Video Games.

In what the BBC labelled as perhaps the festival’s “worst-kept secret”, The Foo Fighters played a “surprise” set at Glastonbury.

The band opted to take the train to the festival.

“Even rock royalty knows that there is no better way to travel to Glastonbury than by train!” the Great Western Railway tweeted.

Lead singer Dave Grohl dedicated the last song of the surprise main stage set to the band’s drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died last year.
