The first teaser trailer for the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel has finally been released, giving us a peek at what director Tim Burton has in store.

It’s been more than 30 years since the original Beetlejuice was released – a 1980s cult flick that helped propel Burton to prominence as a director.

The highly-anticipated sequel includes talent from the first film – including Michael Keaton in the title role, and Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara – and a fresh face Burton has worked with in the past.

That is Jenna Ortega, who worked with Burton to play Wednesday Addams in the Netflix hit, Wednesday.

The teaser trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens with a shot of Ortega riding her bike to the strains of Harry Belafonte’s Banana Boat Song.

The trailer also features Ryder, reprising her role as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara, as her step-mother, Delia, at what appears to be a funeral.

While not seen in the trailer, pictures released by Warner Bros. show Justin Theroux standing alongside the three actresses in the same scene.

We know Ortega plays Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter. But as for Theroux, all we know is that he will plays Rory, with any other details about his character remaining under wraps.

While a children’s choir sings Day-O (The Banana Boat Song), a traditional Jamaican folk song, we see the model town of Winter River and of course, Beetlejuice himself.

Keaton is also reprising his role from 1988.

“The Juice is loose,” he says at the end of the trailer, before we see Lydia’s face riddled with horror.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in Australia in September, giving people plenty of time to re-watch the original if they need a refresher.

Keating stepped right back into Beetlejuice

Besides the cast, little is known about the looming sequel – except that it takes place decades after the original.

The official synopsis does offer some tantalising clues.

“After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened,” it says.

“With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.”

Burton has said little on the record.

“There’s something that happens that sets things in motion,” was all he would tell EW.

Burton also admitted that he and Keaton had talked of a sequel for years, but didn’t feel the need to go through with it “unless it felt right”.

He did admit Keaton was able to step back into the iconic role easily.

“He just got back into it,” he said.

“It was kind of scary for somebody who was maybe not that overly interested in doing it. It was such a beautiful thing for me to see all the cast. But he, sort of like demon possession, just went right back into it.”
