‘Flat’ jokes: Jo Koy responds to Golden Globes criticism

Jo Koy's opening monologue

Golden Globe Awards

Even Jo Koy, the host of the Golden Globes, knows one of his jokes fell flat at the glitzy awards show on Monday.

The Golden Globes was yet to confirm a host until late in December when stand-up comedian and actor Koy decided to take the gig.

He started his opening monologue by saying it was a “dream come true” for him and when he finally got the call, he “jumped” at the chance.

He joked about not seeing any of the films or TV shows which were nominated before getting the hosting gig, but claimed he spent the New Year watching it all.

Koy pitted the two biggest movies of the year, Oppenheimer and Barbie against each other in his opening minutes, which drew some unimpressed looks from those involved in the projects.

Jo Koy had just days to prepare for the Golden Globes.

Oppenheimer and Barbie are competing for cinematic box office achievement. Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project,” Koy said.

“And Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies. I watched Barbie I loved it. I really did love it. I don’t want you guys to think that I’m a creep but it was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll, something about your eyes, Ryan [Gosling].”

Barbie director Greta Gerwig looked very uncomfortable when Koy remarked the movie was about a “plastic doll with big boobies”, while Gosling, who played one of the many Kens, didn’t even crack a smile in response to the host.

Another moment from the Golden Globes that got plenty of criticism was when Koy made a crack at Taylor Swift, whose movie about her remarkable tour was nominated for the cinematic achievement award.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL; on the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” Koy remarked, while Swift took a sip of her drink as the camera panned to her.

Speaking on GMA3: What You Need to Know, Koy acknowledged that his opening monologue fell flat, especially his crack at Swift.

He admitted it was a “weird joke” but claimed it wasn’t aimed at her, but rather at the NFL, which has enjoyed her presence at games since she started dating Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce last year.

Even while on stage, he stated plainly that he only had 10 days to come up with the jokes he would present, saying some were his, some were written by others.

On GMA3 he conceded that he would be lying if he said it didn’t hurt, but overall, he was happy with how he did.

“I hit a little moment there where I was like, ‘Ahh, hosting is just a tough gig’. Yes, I am a stand-up comic but that hosting position is a different style. I kind of went in and did the whole writer’s thing,” he said.

“We just had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but hey, I gotta still say I loved what I did.”

The response to Jo Koy

Koy’s job hosting the Golden Globes was not only not well received by the stars in the room, but panned by people watching along at home.

In response to his joke about Barbie, one person on X said it was commentary like that which resulted in the film being made.

“There are still men out there who exist to tear down women and focus on the way they look rather than their accomplishments,” they said, adding it was “disgusting and so unfunny”.

One person said a headline from Vulture was “funnier” than anything Koy said during the night. The headline was: Jo Koy’s Golden Globes Monologue Might Send Writers Back on Strike.

In fact many thought celebrities’ reactions to their names being called, or Koy’s jokes were funnier than anything he said while hosting.
