Spotify reveals Australia’s most streamed homegrown talent

It has emerged that an unlikely but beloved group are the most streamed Australian artists on Spotify, and a hit from 2013 is still the country’s most streamed song.

Spotify Wrapped is here and finally all users can analyse their most-played songs of the year and judge their friends’ music taste when they share their results to social media.

This year, the most streamed Australian artists on Spotify in Australia were The Wiggles.

The children’s entertainers, who still hold a place in many adults’ hearts, were followed by The Kid LAROI, Vance Joy, Flume and AC/DC.

Despite being released way back in 2013, Riptide by Vance Joy was the most streamed song of the year by an Aussie artist.

Australia’s most-streamed local songs:

Taylor Swift was the most-streamed artist in Australia and is the only female in that top five. She shares the list with Drake, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran and Morgan Wallen.

Wallen’s album was the most streamed album by a global artist in Australia, while Swift’s Midnights also made the cut.

Taylor Swift is Spotify’s top artist

It’s not surprising that Taylor Swift has been crowned Spotify’s most streamed artist globally, clocking up more than 26.1 billion global streams since January 1.

Swift dropped Midnights at the end of 2022, embarked on her record-breaking Era’s Tour and re-released her “stolen” albums, Speak Now and 1989 in the past 12 months.

Swift is followed by Bad Bunny and The Weeknd in the Top 10.

As for the most streamed song, Miley Cyrus wears that crown thanks to her song Flowers, which was released at the very start of 2023.

Since then, Flowers has been streamed over 1.6 billion times. Kill Bill by SZA came in second and was followed by As It Was by Harry Styles.

Viral trends

This year was awash with viral TikTok trends that showed up on Spotify playlists.

When the “Coastal Cowgirl” trend took hold, people were leaning into country music in March.

In light of the trend there was a 2000 per cent increase in playlists named “Coastal Cowgirl”, and songs like Cowboy Take Me Away by The Chicks and Dreams by Fleetwood Mac were quickly added to them.

This year, women found out that men constantly think about the Roman Empire and that became a trend on TikTok.

The Roman Empire trend on TikTok inspired playlists on Spotify.

Subsequently, there was a 580 per cent increase in searches related to the fallen empire on Spotify, with thousands of playlists being made, 75 per cent of them coming from men.

What are Roman Empire related songs you might ask? Viva La Vida by Coldplay and Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears apparently.

The girls were making their own playlists for “girl dinner” and top tracks for those included Cherry by Lana Del Rey and champagne problems by Taylor Swift.

Pop culture also influenced what people were listening to.

When Rihanna played at the Super Bowl, there was a 640 per cent increase in people listening to her music.

Also in February, there was over 200,000 break-up playlists made, coinciding with Valentines Day.

In March, when the final season of Succession was released, streams of the show’s theme song spiked 350 per cent.

The Succession theme was a hit on Spotify.

When The Little Mermaid live-action film was released, there was a 320 per cent increase in streams of both the new and old soundtracks.

Global streams of Spotify’s official playlist for the Barbie movie rose 1560 per cent after the film was released, which featured songs like Aqua’s Barbie Girl and Britney Spear’s Toxic.
