Melania and Donald Trump host ‘giant’ Halloween party amid former president’s legal battles

Melania and Donald Trump have made a rare appearance together for the first time in several months to host a ‘giant’ Halloween party at their Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Dozens of guests dressed up as their favourite Halloween character, but the former first lady, Melania, 53, chose a more subdued plain black Dolce & Gabbana dress with black Louboutin stilettos, while the 77-year-old former president arrived in his standard suit and red tie.

To the tune of Metallica’s Enter Sandman, three separate videos posted by TikTok fan account Flotusreport show the Trumps walking the red carpet through an indoor dining area before emerging to an outdoor terrace, cheered on by fellow guests.

They sat with Melania’s parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who watched on as Trump played tunes from an iPad including Adele’s Hello, Sarah Brightman’s Time to Say Goodbye and Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U, according to the Daily Mail.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, the fiancee of Donald Trump Jr, who was in New York, went to the party alone wearing a Snow White costume, according to the Washington Examiner.

It’s the first time the Trumps have been pictured together in nearly seven months, when they were sitting together over Easter at their resort on April 9, reports the New York Post.

Invited guests chose a range of Halloween costumes, including two men dressed as serving President Joe Biden and his embattled son Hunter – who carried a life-size blow-up doll, a large glass bong and white substance inside a ziplocked bag.

Another party took to Instagram for a group shot, wearing pirate, princess and witches costumes before dancing the night away under a strobe-lit dancefloor.

Also making an appearance was the big bad wolf at a nearby roped-off table accompanying Little Red Riding Hood, devils and angels, nuns in costume and even a Pan Am flight attendant.

The appearance comes as Trump prepares to face a civil fraud trial in New York next week.

It is one of four criminal cases he’s facing, where he has made disparaging comments about prosecutors in each.

It includes the New York state attorney general who brought the civil fraud charges, accusing the former US president and his family businesses of inflating asset values to dupe lenders and insurers.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges that he plotted to interfere unlawfully in the counting of votes and block the congressional certification of his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

On November 1 (US time), Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr was the first of Trump’s adult children to testify in the New York trial, followed by Eric and Ivanka Trump.

Trump is expected to testify on Monday.

Trump Jr said he had little to do with financial practices at the heart of the case, saying he and Eric largely took over management of the company when their father assumed the presidency in 2017.

His testimony could continue over the coming days and could be another flashpoint in a trial punctuated by sharp exchanges between lawyers and witnesses and heated arguments over the admissibility of evidence.

The lawsuit by Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James accuses Trump, his two adult sons and a handful of their family businesses of inflating their assets by billions of dollars to secure better loan terms.

The trial is one of many legal troubles Trump faces as he campaigns to retake the White House.

Opinion polls show he holds a commanding lead over his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination to face Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 2024 election.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and has repeatedly accused James and Judge Arthur Engoron of political bias.

“Leave my children alone, Engoron. You are a disgrace to the legal profession!” he wrote on social media on Wednesday morning.

Trump is under a limited gag order barring him from speaking publicly about court staff but has twice violated it and been fined $US15,000 ($23,500) for attacking Engoron’s top clerk, whom he has accused of bias.

He has not faced sanctions for his attacks on Engoron or James.

The Washington judge overseeing his federal election subversion trial has also imposed a limited gag order.

Trump has alleged that both violate his right to free speech.

Trump is not required to attend trial, and did not appear in court on Wednesday.

He appeared in court last week for a dramatic reunion with his former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, who testified against him last week.

Cohen, appearing face to face with Trump for the first time since their acrimonious split five years ago, said Trump directed him to inflate asset values to arrive at the arbitrary net worth he desired.

Despite his ongoing legal troubles, Trump remains the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 US election, and is expected to campaign later this week when Eric Trump is set to testify.

In September, before the trial began, Engoron found that Trump fraudulently inflated his net worth and ordered the dissolution of companies that control pillars of his real estate portfolio, including Trump Tower in Manhattan.

That ruling is on hold while Trump appeals.

The trial largely concerns damages.

James is seeking at least $US250 million ($391 million) in fines, a permanent ban against Trump and his two adult sons from running businesses in New York, and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Trump and the Trump Organisation.
