If you’ve been waiting forever for the next season of your favourite show, this month is jam-packed full of the latest episodes to major hit series.

From Henry Cavill’s last run in The Witcher, to a new Nickelodeon flick giving millennials a walk down memory lane, read on to find out what you could be binge-watching in July.

WHAM!

5 July – Netflix

This documentary gives audiences insight into Andrew Ridgeley and the late George Michael’s transition from best buds to ’80s pop icons through rare archival interviews and never-before-seen footage.

From the director of Tiger King, this project pays tribute to the close bond between two childhood friends who found themselves living the dream, while exploring the cost to the then-closeted Michael of the teen heartthrob persona he was forced to don along with his canary-yellow Fila tennis shorts.

The Back Side of Television (season two)

Release date: 10 July – Binge

The Australian comedy series, created, written and hosted by Mitch McTaggart, returns for a six-part exploration all the ridiculous, dispiriting and outright shameful moments in the wild history of Australian TV.

Programs in the firing line include the likes of Play SchoolBananas in Pyjamas, The Footy Show and The Gloaming.

“Whether we like it or not, we’ve all been shaped by television in our lives. Across every possible genre – game shows, news, drama – it’s all vital context to understanding who we are as people,” McTaggart said.

“This series is huge. We’ve gone so far into the archives this time, we’re basically finding old tapes in air vents. Expect to see hilariously shocking stories about your favourite shows, and plenty you’ve never heard of.”

Miracle Workers: End Times (season four)

Release date: 11 July – Stan

Daniel Radcliffe, Steve Buscemi, Geraldine Viswanathan, and more return for a fourth run of the chaotic anthology comedy series.

After playing around in the offices of Heaven Inc., the Dark Ages, and America’s Old West, the show now sends the cast into a post-apocalyptic future.

End Times will take the audience along for a wild ride as wasteland warrior (Radcliffe) and ruthless warlord (Viswanathan) face the most dystopian nightmare of all: Settling down in the suburbs.

Together, they navigate the existential horrors of married life and small-town living, all under the dubious guidance of a wealthy junk trader (Buscemi), a faithful war dog (Jon Bass) and a kill-bot (Karan Soni) who loves to party.

What We Do in the Shadows (season five)

Release date: 14 July – Binge

The bloodsucking mockumentary is back, along with all of the deadly-but-hopeless-at-life roommates fans love.

The fifth season will see Nandor (Kayvan Novak) deal with feeling his familiar (and sometimes friend) Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) is slipping away and spending much more time with Laszlo (Matt Berry).

Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) reconnects with her family — or at least, a family — from the Old Country, while Colin (Mark Proksch) has left behind his baby phase and is back to his usual self as he pursues the path of so many energy vampires before him by running for political office.

Meanwhile, The Guide (Kristen Schaal) tries to figure out where she fits in as the relative newcomer to this tightly-knit group

The Bear (season two)

Release date: 19 July – Disney+

Australian fans might face a month-long wait compared to US audiences to feast on the newest season of this critically-acclaimed show.

But the latest episodes of The Bear will eventually make their way to the southern hemisphere, and they promise to maintain the themes around food, family, the insanity of the grind, the beauty of Sense of Urgency and the steep slippery downsides.

As young chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and crew work to transform their grimy sandwich shop into a next-level spot, they undertake transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future.

The second season is already receiving rave reviews, and sees a bunch of certified stars make appearances, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Paulson, John Mulaney, Bob Odenkirk and Will Poulter.

Minx (season two)

Release date: 21 July – Stan

Minx centres around Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), a young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher Doug (Jake Johnson); together, they navigate 1970s Los Angeles porn, plus personal and societal prejudices to create the first erotic magazine for women.

The sophomore season will follow Doug and Joyce as they grapple with the magazine’s explosive success, which brings more money, fame and temptation than either of them know how to handle.

The road to season two for this American period comedy has been a rollercoaster; the show was initially renewed by HBO Max, who reversed the decision later as a cost-cutting measure.

Minx has since found a second life with Starz, a US TV network owned by Lionsgate (the latter is the production company behind Minx).

Drag Me to Dinner

Release date: 26 July – Disney+

A fresh take on drag reality competition shows, Drag Me To Dinner is a riotous, format-busting, fourth-wall-breaking, and unapologetic.

Each episode sees two teams of successful drag queens go head-to-head to throw the most fabulous dinner parties of all time, and be crowned champion by the three judgers: Neil Patrick Harris, Bianca Del Rio, and Haneefah Wood.

Hosted by comedian and drag king Murray Hill, each episode has its own unique theme, which will be revealed by show producer (and husband to Patrick Harris) David Burtka.

The comedic culinary-costumed chaos will take place as teams focus on multiple criteria: Food and Drink, Design and Decor, and Entertainment and Overall Vibe.

The Witcher (season three, volume two)

Release date: 27 July – Netflix

Following the release of the first half of the season in June, volume two will double as Henry Cavill’s final bow as the Geralt of Rivia before Australia’s own Liam Hemsworth takes over the role.

While Cavill has largely kept mum about his decision to leave his wildly-popular role, speculation has been rife that the actor – a huge fan of the source material for the show – was dissatisfied with direction the Netflix production was taking.

During a Netflix Tudum event in June, Cavill bid an emotional goodbye to fans and his co-stars onstage with him: Freya Allan [Princess Cirilla of Cintra], Anya Chalotra [Yennefer of Vengerberg] and Joey Batey [Jaskier].

“I really feel the love and I love you guys too … I actually just want to talk about my co-stars here, because once again, it was such a pleasure and an honour to be working with you guys,” said Cavill.

“You guys bring so much nuance and detail to these characters, which are often at risk of being oversimplified, and what you guys have done with the characters has involved work, care, and effort, and believe me, working with you guys was the biggest pleasure.

“So, just want to say I’m gonna miss you. I’m gonna miss you very much.”

The show’s third season will see Geralt and Yennefer united and fighting to keep Ciri safe, as the princess with mysterious powers is hunted by everyone from mages to royals.

Twisted Metal

Release date: 27 July – Stan

Inspired by a cult-classic PlayStation game, just the names alone behind this new series should get you excited.

Marvel star Anthony Mackie and Brooklyn Nine-Nine favourite Stephanie Beatriz will help bring to life an original narrative by Rhett Reese (Deadpool) and Paul Wernick (Zombieland), all of whom are leaning into their strengths with this action-comedy show.

Mackie will be taking centre-stage as a chatty outsider who has a chance at a better life – if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Zoey 102

Release date: 27 July – Paramount+

In yet another addition to the recent spate of ’90s and early ’00s revivals, this movie will follow-on from the Nickelodeon series Zoey 101, which ran from 2005 to 2008.

Set over a decade after the original series ended, the movie will follow the group of Pacific Coast Academy alumni who return to Malibu for the over-the-top wedding between Quinn (Erin Sanders) and Logan (Matthew Underwood).

But it isn’t long before the whole affair turns into an unofficial high school reunion.
