A Melbourne man has lost over 50kg after eating nothing but potatoes for a whole year.

Andrew Taylor weighed 151kg when he decided to change his life – subjecting himself to a diet consisting solely of spuds and a variety of sauces and seasonings from January 1, 2016.

Now just under two weeks from fulfilling his pledge, Mr Taylor said he’s lighter, happier and wants to spread the good word.

Calling his program “Spud Fit”, Mr Taylor posts recipes and advice on his website, as well as selling t-shirts and other merchandise.

He’s eaten baked potatoes, boiled potatoes, mashed potato and potato pancakes – but deep frying and oil is banned.

Eating up to four kilograms of spuds per day, Mr Taylor happily carts his own potatoes to friends’ dinner parties and other social occasions.

Prior to the Spud Challenge, Mr Taylor said he was “addicted” to food, lethargic and unhappy.

“I’ve always been a big eater, sucking down a large pizza on my own was easy,” he wrote on his blog.

“Three big bowls of pasta for dinner was not a problem. Half a chocolate cake to myself was a good time.”

He said by restricting his diet to only potatoes, he began to see food as fuel, and despite various doctors warning him against the extreme diet, Mr Taylor’s blood tests have been continually improving.

On January 1 Mr Taylor is hosting a celebratory lunch, but despite the exciting dishes on offer, he told News.com.au he will probably stick to the potatoes.
