Australians are being asked to return tubs of Blue Ribbon ice-cream after risky pieces of plastic were found inside the product.

Food giant Unilever was forced to recall tubs of the ice-cream as a “precautionary” measure, saying the plastic posed a possible injury risk.

The contamination affects all flavours of Blue Ribbon ice-cream in both 1.25 litre and 2 litre tubs.

In a statement, Unilever said the plastic had only been identified in a small number of cases.

“This is an operational issue whereby plastic appears to have entered some tubs during the production process,” a Unilever spokeswoman said.

“We have undertaken a full investigation of the issue and reviewed our quality assurance measures.

“We have implemented a number of measures to address the issue and are confident the steps we have taken have rectified the problem.”

The contaminated tubs have ‘best before’ dates between April 28, 2017 and April 28, 2018.

Tubs with a ‘best before’ date from April 28, 2018 are not affected, according to the company.

Customers who return their tubs will be able to get a full refund.

Consumers can contact Unilever by calling 1800 801 885 or emailing [email protected].
