To celebrate the upcoming wedding of the son of Asia’s richest man, billionaires and influential people headed to India, with one of the world’s biggest stars coming out of “retirement”.

Anant Ambani, the youngest son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is getting married to Radhika Merchant in July this year and over the weekend, they threw an opulent pre-wedding party.

While many in the Anglosphere perhaps haven’t heard the Ambani name, their guests were certainly well known.

Bill Gates was in attendance with his partner Paula Hurd, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was there with wife Priscilla Chan, as was Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, and her husband Jared Kushner.

Given the guest list and the sparkling photos which have emerged from the celebration, the internet has been buzzing about the event.

What’s the deal with the Ambani family?

Mukesh Ambani is the richest man in all of Asia.

He is the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, which has interests in petrochemicals, oil and gas, telecom, retail and financial services.

He has an estimated net worth of around $117 billion ($A179 billion) and resides in Mumbai, India.

His soon-to-be-married son, Anant, works as the director of a Reliance-operated energy business. Reliance was started by his grandfather Dhirubhai Ambani, who was a yarn merchant.

According to the Times of India, Anant’s fiancé, Radhika Merchant, is a professional Bharatnatyam dancer.

What happened at the Ambani pre-wedding event?

According to Reuters, the celebrations kicked off on Friday and it was reported ahead of time that 1200 guests would descend on the township of Jamnagar.

However, Anant and Merchant served more than 50,000 villagers two days before the party started by hosting a communal meal.

Reuters managed to get a hold of a document that was given to the attendees and reported that 100 chefs would prepare over 500 meals during the three-day celebration, with hair styling and make-up artists also available.

In terms of entertainment at the pre-wedding celebration, Rihanna was reportedly paid $6 million to perform.

Rihanna hasn’t released a new album since 2016 and has taken something of a hiatus from music; granted, she has started her own make-up and skincare empire in that time.

Videos from the event seem to show her performance was anything but low-key and rather, a full-blown stage production.

Illusionist David Blaine was also performing for the guests.

In addition to Zuckerberg, Gates and the Kushners attending, there were plenty of other famous faces.

Several cricketers were there, including Australian cricketer Tim David, who was snapped alongside his wife Stephanie Kershaw and India’s former cricket captain MS Dhoni.

There were several Bollywood stars and prominent Indian business people at the pre-wedding party also.

The guest were also slated to be taken to the Reliance-owned animal rescue sanctuary, where more than 2000 animals reside.

What about the Ambani wedding?

Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant are expected to get married in July this year.

It’s expected more information about the wedding and the guest list will be revealed closer to the date, though if the pre-wedding party is anything to go by, expect it to be lavish.

According to the Times of India, the two were engaged at a traditional Gol Dhana ceremony last January.
