Christmas tipped to be wet and stormy across nation

The typical Australian Christmas is famous for providing warm, sunny weather – perfect for a backyard barbecue or day at the beach.

But much of eastern Australia won’t be so lucky this year, with the skies predicted to be wet and stormy.

Forecasts aren’t set in stone with Christmas still almost a week away but if you want to plan ahead, read on to find out what might be in store for your local weather this holiday season based on capital city forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology and AccuWeather.

Sydney

Christmas Eve: Maximum temperature of 28 degrees. Partly cloudy, high chance of showers and a chance of a thunderstorm.

Christmas Day: Maximum temperature of 26 degrees. Cloudy, with a high chance of showers.

Boxing Day: Maximum temperature of 29 degrees. Partly cloudy with a medium chance of showers.

Melbourne

Christmas Eve: Maximum temperature of 22 degrees. Cloudy, with a medium chance of showers.

Christmas Day: Maximum temperature of 21 degrees. Partly cloudy, with a medium chance of showers.

Boxing Day: Maximum temperature of 25 degrees. Partly cloudy, with a medium chance of showers.

Brisbane

Christmas Eve: Maximum temperature of 31 degrees. Partly cloudy with a high chance of showers, and a chance of a thunderstorm.

Christmas Day: Maximum temperature of 32 degrees. Partly cloudy with a high chance of showers, along with a chance of a thunderstorm.

Boxing Day: Maximum temperature of 32 degrees. Cloudy, with a high chance of showers.

Canberra

Christmas Eve: Maximum temperature of 28 degrees. Cloudy, with a high chance of showers and a chance of a thunderstorm.

Christmas Day: Maximum temperature of 24 degrees. Partly cloudy, with a medium chance of showers.

Boxing Day: Maximum temperature of 28 degrees. Partly cloudy and a medium chance of showers.

Darwin

Christmas Eve: Maximum temperature of 35 degrees. Partly cloudy, with a chance of showers and, later in the day, a thunderstorm.

Christmas Day: Maximum temperature of 36 degrees. Partly cloudy, with a chance of an afternoon shower or a thunderstorm.

Boxing Day: Maximum temperature of 36 degrees. Partly cloudy, with a chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

Perth

Christmas Eve: Maximum temperature of 33 degrees, and sunny.

Christmas Day: Maximum temperature of 32 degrees. Partly cloudy.
