Australia’s coffee culture might be famous, but that’s not the only beverage we’re partial to.

Many Australians appreciate a good bar, and whether you’re after a quick mid-week beer or fun date night, there are a lot of options to choose from.

Some stand out from the pack, with three Aussie establishments among the world’s top 100 bars, and two making the top 50.

Without further ado, here are the Australian bars ranked among the world’s best on the The World’s 50 Best Bars list.

Maybe Sammy – Sydney

Ranked No. 15 worldwide, and also scoring the title of ‘The Best Bar in Australasia’, Maybe Sammy won praise for its emphasis on guest experience – both on more subdued weeknights and pumped-up weekends.

Maybe Sammy takes inspiration from the roaring 1950s, with a focus on fashion, fun and Hollywood glamour.

Since opening in 2019, the bar has collected a range of accolades, but 50 Best found the bar team is still taking things to the next level with its latest Mirage menu (the bar changes its menu every 12 months).

Cocktails on the menu include the Ligurian Sting: Beeswax and olive gin, pine nut and butter washed cocchi americano, Suze and caramel honeycomb.

“When paired with the experience on offer – bubble guns, elaborate and experiential serves, full team dance routines – Maybe Sammy makes a night to remember,” 50 Best Bars stated.

Caretaker’s Cottage – Melbourne

A small bar steeped in history, Caretaker’s Cottage has risen from No.60 in 2022 (the same year it opened) to No.23 this year.

Situated in a former caretaker’s cottage behind a church in Melbourne’s CBD, the bar was lauded for its lighting, sound (music courtesy of a high-grade record player) and natural timber adornments, all creating a “subtle temple to great drinks”.

One of the drinks included in the October menu of the dog-friendly establishment is Snail & The Whale: Hendrick’s Flora Adora, blueberry wine, montenegro, blood orange and camomile leaf.

“The personality of the space is to keep it unpretentious. Guinness is always on, and we’ve always got a martini – our favourite interpretation of,” co-owner Matt Stirling previously told Bars and Clubs.

Byrdi – Melbourne

Melbourne’s known for being home to some of Australia’s best coffee culture, and now it’s making a strong case for best bar culture, too.

Byrdi has ranked at No.61 in the world’s top 100 bars; a clear win not just for the cocktail bar, but for locally-grown ingredients as well.

From the owners Luke Whearty and Aki Nishikura, the pair behind Singapore’s now-closed Operation Dagger (which reached No.23 on The World’s 50 Best Bars list in 2018), Byrdi’s menu focuses largely on what’s in season.

For example, the autumn menu featured drinks such as Apple: Dixons Creek apple, fermented apple skins, camomile and rotten apple.

This year, the establishment was named Best Cocktail Bar in Victoria and Best Cocktail Bar in Australia at the annual Australian Bartender Magazine Bar Awards.
