Boxing Day sales: Inside scoop on the best bargains

Despite record low retail spending in the lead up to Christmas, a retail boss forecasts post-Christmas spending will be bigger than last year.

Head of Australian Retailers Association, Russell Zimmerman, said though the sales tend to be associated with electronics, white goods and clothing, “of the money that’s spent on Boxing Day, about half is on food”.

A survey of 2017 Australians by Finder, predicts Aussies will spend more than $1 billion (the equivalent of $727,307 a minute) on the day.

However, 22 per cent of those surveyed said they’d be avoiding the Boxing Day sales due to “discount fatigue”.

Twenty-eight per cent still plan to hit the shops on Boxing Day – with those in NSW and Victoria most likely to nab a bargain.

While younger shoppers – Generation Z and Y – are most likely to go bargain- hunting on the day, it’s anticipated Generation X will spend the most.

Although most retailers now have an online presence, most people still prefer to shop in stores.

“Online sales represent around 7 to 8 per cent of the total post Christmas sales,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“People like the excitement of Boxing Day. They like to touch and feel things, especially when they’re buying clothing and footwear.”

To avoid angst on the day, “be polite. Don’t push and shove,” he said.

Or shop online.

Most retailers activate their online Boxing Day sales at closing time Christmas Day, meaning it’s possible to start shopping online for specials as early as 5pm or 6pm on Christmas Eve, he said.

However, there’s plenty of time to grab a bargain with many sales running until around January 15.

Adam Drexler, owner of retail outlet, Matt Blatt, suggests planning ahead to minimise impulse buying on the day.

“Just like you would when you go grocery shopping, make a list! Customers get swept away by the allure of 70, 80 and 90 percent discounts and forget what they actually need. Don’t let the bargain blind you! One item may be more expensive, but for good reason.”
