A new London development will feature a 25-metre swimming pool, suspended in mid-air.

The ‘sky pool’ will connect two buildings within the yet-to-built Nine Elms Quarter, set for completion in 2017.

Engineering firm Arup Associates designed the pool in conjunction with developers HAL – a world first.

Swimmers will feel they are wading in mid-air, suspended in a 20 centimetre-thick, transparent glass casing above London’s busy city centre.

The groundbreaking pool – built to resemble an aquarium – was designed with specialist advice from marine design engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds.

“My vision for the sky pool stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering,” Ballymore Group chairman and CEO, Sean Mulryan told Dezeen.

“I wanted to do something that had never been done before.”

The innovative new complex will also feature a rooftop bar, spa and orangery.

River Elms will be connected to the rest of London by two new tube stations, and will include a new square designed by architecture firm BIG.
