Change your thinking

Metricon interior designer Hannah Joosse says the most effective walk-in robes are the ones in which you not only store clothes in, but also change in – similar to those made famous by films and television shows such as the original Sex in The City movie.

“A space for a cupboard and a space to stand and change is a minimum requirement,’’ says Ms Joosse.

Compartmentalise

The designer suggests householders take into account the clothing and other items they wear most frequently and create “spaces devoted to these different types of clothing and accessories’’.

Ms Joosse adds homeowners should also use the full height of the wardrobe to maximise their storage capacity.

“Always include single and double hanging rails to boost that capacity,’’ she says.

Mirror, mirror

The Metricon spokeswoman points out that mirrors are a great way of creating a spacious vibe in a small and confined area like a walk-in robe.

“They (mirrors) are also great for when working out what to wear,’’ she says.

Maximise the space

For larger walk-in robes with plenty of middle space, Ms Joosse recommends installing a storage unit or dresser “which will provide additional storage and maximise the robe space’’.

For those who hate clutter, the interior designer suggests fitting doors to the walk-in robe. “A walk-in robe will always feel a little messy because of all the colours, sizes, shapes and materials, so if this bothers you, you have the ability to close the space off,’’ Ms Joosse says.

Get the light right

The Metricon designer advises that while maximising space in the walk-in robe is important, getting the light right is also crucial.

“Remember robes tend to be smallish and tallish,’’ she says. “Using extra height can mean a feeling of dark overpowering space. So if you have cabinetry that runs floor to ceiling or you have items stacked it’s important that the lighting is directly above or within the cabinetry so that it is task oriented and focused, and you are not simply relying on one light in the middle of the space.’’

Shoe me how

Ms Joosse says any walk-in robe space should allow for footwear. “Don’t forget your shoes,’’ she says. “Including adjustable shoe shelves are proving to be very popular at the moment.”
